About Us

The Serio Boat Yard is a website dedicated to the history of Vincent J. ("Pappy") Serio, Sr. and his boatbuilding from the years 1929-1968.  We will be adding information over the next year in anticipation of the 75th anniversary of the Hampton One-Design in 2009.

The Serio family has amassed a great volume of photographs, news clippings, and other historical information about Pappy and the Hampton One-Design from his birth to the present.  Selected material will be available on the web as it is added.

History

Vincent J. ("Pappy") Serio, Sr. built boats in the Virginia Tidewater region beginning in 1929 at Hampton Roads Boatworks in Newport News, Virginia.  In the late 1940's, he relocated to Hilton Village, Virginia, opening Serio Boats.  His last business location, Serio Boat Yard, on Hampton Creek was located in Hampton, Virginia, where he worked until retirement in 1968.

The photograph to the right shows Pappy with his coveted President's Cup first place trophy won in the 1937 Knockabout competition, where his HOD #13 rocketed by all the other boats in the race.
